A way of connecting several computers together within an office or building so that you can exchange files or messages with another user on another computer that is connected to the local area network. To set up a local area network, each PC needs a network adapter fitted inside it and each then needs to be linked together with cable. A wide area network is similar to a local area network, but links computers that are miles apart - even those in different countries.
